GUTTING NOT CUTTING!

LETTER FROM JAN DAVIS

ALTHOUGH it reads more like a general press release from central office than a personal letter, I would thank Graham Stuart for reminding us in the Beverley Guardian of what the coalition government has achieved for the business community in its first 100 days.

Could I also remind him of what the coalition government has done for public services and community projects during the same period:

  • Support for children struggling to read withdrawn,
  • New school playgrounds cancelled,
  • Hospital and school building programmes cancelled,
  • Major road works cancelled,
  • Play equipment schemes cut,
  • Subsided school buses cut,
  • Works on coastal pathways cut (including in East Yorkshire),
  • Funding for the disabled to get back to work cut,
  • Building of new council house programmes cut,

THUMBS UP FOR BEVERLEY'S NEW HOSPITAL!

Attention: open in a new window.  E-mail

An attitudes survey in Beverley has given proposals for the new Community Hospital overwhelming support.

The clear message to the Health Authority is 'Get on with it.'

Members of Beverley Labour Party were out in force on Saturday 21 August asking passersby whether they were supportive or opposed to the proposals.
Paul McGrath a prospective Labour Councillor for the Minster and Woodmansey ward said,
'We asked people if they were from the area and of the 235 people who were local 220 said “get on with it.” ‘

Dave Sweet, also a prospective councillor said, 'It was astonishing.  Only 15 people said they were opposed - primarily due to concerns about access.   I've done a lot of these street surveys and I've never known a project with such popular support.

We will pass on our findings to the Strategic Health Authority and ask that they take the project forward as quickly as possible.'

2011 East Riding Council Elections

Attention: open in a new window.  E-mail

Paul McGrath, Dave Sweet and Jim Whitfield have been selected to fight for Labour for the three Beverley Minster and Woodmansey seats in next years elections. They are all long term loyal members of the party who believe in a society that seeks for justice and equality of opportunity however difficult that may be to achieve.

The ConDem Coalition will create greater injustice and less equality. Women in particular will suffer from the cuts in government spending.

Government cuts will lead to private cuts. People without jobs can't buy new cars, new houses, holidays abroad, meals out etc. So car workers will lose jobs , construction workers will lose jobs, tourism and catering workers will all lose jobs - so even less demand. Where will the growth come from?

And meanwhile the banks make bigger and ever bigger profits and the bankers get bigger and ever bigger bonuses!

Where is the justice there? Where is the equality?

What the government is taking from us - £6 billion - could be taken from the bank profits this year and they wouldn't even notice it.

Dont be deluded - the East Riding Council is a Conservative Council and will follow its masters in cutting down the services that we at present enjoy.

Dave, Jim and Paul will fight to preserve these services for you.

To Everyone who voted Labour on 6th May

Attention: open in a new window.  E-mail

Thank you

I would like to thank everyone who voted Labour last week. Obviously, I am dis-appointed that we did not do better. Infact we did worse than 2005 in that we came third. However, I am mainly disappointed for the 11224 people who had the faith in myself and the Labour Party to vote for us. I am, also, dis-appointed for the many Party Members who worked so tirelessly over many months. I would like to thank each and everyone of you.

We now know that the Tories and Lib Dems have sold their principles in order to gain power. That as I predicted a vote for yellow was a vote for blue. The Lib Dems are no longer closet Tories but have come out as blue.

Whatever, happens over the coming months and I believe there will be another General Election within the year I would like to know what the people of Beverley & Holderness think about our current voting system:
  1. Do you want to keep the current first past the post system?
  2. Do you agree with the alternate vote system?
  3. Would you prefer alternate vote+ system?
  4. Single Transferable Vote system?
  5. Another form of PR?

Regards

Ian Saunders
Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Beverley & Holderness

Only one more hurdle for Beverley Hospital!

If the full business case is given approval by the Strategic Health Authority work could start on the hospital this autumn and the first patients could be admitted in Spring 2012.
