Sure Start in Danger!

Last year David Cameron and George Osbourne announced that a future Tory Government would cut the Sure Start budget by 20% to save approximately £200million. They have not retracted that promise to date. Because Sure Start is a ringfenced budget this would mean that 1 of the 4 centres (Beverley, Hornsea, Hedon and Withernsea) would have to close.

I have challenged Graham Stuart to say if he backs this closure by his party and, if so, which centre would he close. He has not responded.

David Willetts the Tory Spokesperson for Univerisities and Skills has been quoted as saying on the 22nd January 2010 that "very few of the 3197 centres would remain open and those that did would be to serve only the most deprived areas".

If this is true it would mean that all 4 of our centres would close.

Again I have challenged Graham Stuart and again no response (as at - 25th January 2010).

Because I believe Sure Start to be so vital to children and parents / carers that I went to London to speak directly with Diana Johnson, MP for Hull North and Minister for Schools at the Department for Children, Families and Schools, in the House of Commons. Diana responded very positively that if Labour form the next Government they intend to increase the current 3197 to 3500.

The people of Beverley & Holderness have a clear choice:

Closure of all our Sure Start Centres under the Tories or expand and improve them under Labour.

Paul McGrath is Beverley Labour Party's choice to fight the By-Election on February 4th. He is a strong believer in fighting on local issues - This is his manifesto:

I am your local Labour candidate for the Town Council by election.

I believe in campaigning for local issues which affect local people.

Our Labour government is delivering for local people:

  • £20m for a brand new hospital – Opposed by the Tories
  • £20m for the Beverley Southern by-pass. Promised by the Tories for years - Now being delivered by Labour.
  • Record investment in our schools, affordable housing and the police

Update on Smoking Survey

A further investigation on attitudes to smoking in Hedon followed the one undertaken in Beverley. Ian Saunders and a group of party members visited Hedon just before christmas asking the same questions as at Beverley.  Very similar results were obtained
A massive 82% back the current ban including smokers.
2/3rds agree that tobacco products should be out of sight/under the counter.
2/3rds agree vending machines should be banned and that the legislation should be enforced better.

Why Labour?

Stuart is a new member of the Labour Party - these are his thoughts

Supporting Labour is not always a choice.

No one can ‘choose’ not to be affected by politics, even if they choose to say they’re not interested. And as appealing as it might be to ignore the feuds and fights of politicians, events do not always give people that choice.

I’m 23. In nearly a hundred years only Labour has stood for the many against the interests of the few. In the next ten years the many are going to pay for the extravagance of the few; in service cuts and unprogressive tax rises.

I support Labour because I am not deluded that I have something to gain from an unfair society. I have my future to fight for, and that I have no choice over.

Smoking attitudes survey reveals public doubts

Attention: open in a new window.  E-mail

A survey of the public's attitude to smoking in public has revealed some surprising results.

Beverley and Holderness Labour Party volunteers conducted the survey on the morning of Saturday 28 November.   Over 100 members of the public were selected at random in Beverley town centre and questioned on a range of issues from the smoking ban in pubs to the open display of tobacco products for sale.

The vast majority of people said the current ban on smoking in public places such as restaurants and pubs should stay although a significant number said provisions for smokers such as smoking rooms should be considered.   Most people thought that removing tobacco products from public display might discourage children from smoking but did not feel that vending machines should be banned.

These were the questions

  1. Do you agree that smoking should be banned in public places as is the case now?
  2. Do you think that all tobacco products should be banned from sale altogether?
  3. Do you agree that all tobacco products should be out of sight / under the counter?
  4. Should specialist tobacco shops be exempt from this legislation?
  5. Do you agree that tobacco vending machines should be banned?
  6. Should the present and future legislation be more strictly enforced?

Speaking today, Ian Saunders, Labour's Prospective Parliamentary candidate for Beverley and Holderness said:

“We really appreciate the public giving up their time to stand and talk to us on a bitterly cold morning in Beverley. Some of these findings are quite revealing. Over the next few weeks we will be travelling around the constituency with our survey - our next stop will be in Hedon on 12 December.
Our detailed findings will be presented to Health Secretary Andy Burnham.”
